What they most fear | Andre Malraux said this in 1984. "The 21st century will be religious or not at all.": It was considered a very controversial statement in 1946, on the footsteps of WW2. A lot of people commented a lot and refused to accept it or tried to add their own spin on it. Some people claimed that he had meant religious. Others just rejected it outfront. What does it even mean, spiritual? It has a lot to do with the reality of the interbellic world. Many people had described it as soulless and empty and materialistic. For someone like Malraux, it would have probably sounded pretty accurate. The horrors of the Great War has bene terrible for everybody, but the second world war was a very different thing. Now, the savagery on all sides wasn’t just unheard of. It was just escalated on all sides. And, of course, it came after the tumultuous thirties. Malraux of all people had not forgotten the Spanish civil war with its own brand of horrors. It’s been more than 80 years. Few remember the discussions the world’s thinkers were carrying on after the horror. Malraux was not the only one who believed the atrocities had their root in the savage materialism of the day. Communism was still fresh and scary, and the crimes of the Spanish Communists were notorious. The massacres of the nuns and priests… the destruction of churches… Since the French Revolution and the Bolshevik one in faraway Russia, few people conceived of such savagery. But why? What could cause humans to become such beats towards one another? Homo homini lupus. When you take away faith and a spiritual life, humans are just the most savage of beasts. What Malraux meant was that humans can’t exist without a spiritual dimension to their lives. Religion. Identity. Morality. Of course, the important part in this is in fact religion. For a very long time, Europe had a different name. Christendom. It was enough. When our ancestors fought to keep the Turks and Tatars out, they weren’t doing it just for themselves. They were defending Christendom. This is why our enemies have fought so hard to sever the link between us and our faith- the Church. What are we without faith is not beasts? Stupid, living for the most base instincts beasts? This is what they want us to be. Empty, soulless beasts. Easy to control. This is why they destroyed our churches. This is why they are trying to taint our souls with corruption. This is what they are afraid of. Our souls This is what they most fear. |
